The Westinghouse Atom Smasher Particle Accelerator played a key role in nuclear power research worldwide and should be saved! This large, pear-shaped tower once stood straight up and out of the Westinghouse Research Laboratory. The tower, named the Atom Smasher, is 65 feet tall, 30 feet in diameter, and has a spectacular history. Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. It was mothballed in 1958, and when I photographed it in 2013 there was hope to preserve the structure as part of a school. Two years later, however, it was torn down.

2020-05-26 2020-07-27 The Westinghouse Atom Smasher – one of the most pivotal parts of our history in nuclear research in not only the United States, but the entire world. This accelerator worked by static electricity from a Van de Graaff generator, which was invented by Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1929. Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher in Forest Hills, PA (the large, bulb-shaped structure on the right) paved the way for researching nonmilitary uses for nuclear energy. Westinghouse Electric Company has been responsible for some of the world’s greatest technological achievements, including many within the nuclear industry, such as: The industry’s first and the world’s largest atom smasher to study nuclear physics; Reactor design for the first nuclear-powered submarine, the U.S.S. Nautilus; and,

The five-story tall, light bulb-shaped structure is the last vestige of the Westinghouse Research Laboratories—though it has admittedly seen better days since being 2015-09-16 · Built in 1937, the Westinghouse Atom Smasher, an engineering milestone, was a 5,000,000-volt Van de Graaff electrostatic nuclear accelerator and the centerpiece of the world’s first large-scale nuclear physics program. The Atom Smasher was designed to create nuclear reactions via bombarding target atoms with a high-energy particle beam. Westinghouse CEO Danny Roderick is among those dismayed about the demolition this week that knocked down the historic atom smasher still bearing the corporation's logo."I was really saddened when 2015-11-08 · Ex-atom smasher with Paul Rand’s great Westinghouse logo still clearly visible It’s also beautiful.
