Course Inertial sensors can also be combined with time of arrival measurements from an ultrawideband (UWB) system. We focus both on calibration of the UWB setup and on sensor fusion of the inertial and UWB measurements. The UWB measurements are modeled by a tailored heavy-tailed asymmetric distribution. Sensor fusion level can also be defined basing on the kind of information used to feed the fusion algorithm. More precisely, sensor fusion can be performed fusing raw data coming from different sources, extrapolated features or even decision made by single nodes.

In the presented sensor fusion approach, centralized filtering of related sensor signals is used to improve and correct low price sensor measurements. From this, we compute high-quality state information as drift-free yaw rate and exact velocity (accounting for unknown tire radius and slipping wheels on 4WD ve-hicles).

The method is demonstrated in simulation and by a real-time implementation of a 3-layer network with 2694 neurons used for visual classification of MNIST handwritten digits with input from a 128 × 128 Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) silicon retina, and sensory-fusion using additional input from a 64-channel AER-EAR silicon cochlea. One can distinguish direct fusion, indirect fusion and fusion of the outputs of the former two.
